Walk Information

The Market Brough and Church Brough route is an easy 6km (3.75m) mile circular walk taking in local heritage, streams, and the ruins of Brough Castle. Brough Castle. Historic 11th-century ruins built over a Roman fort site, featuring informative display boards and free entry. it also takes in St Michael’s Church featuring Norman architectural remains, a sloping floor, and rich local heritage displays.

Accessibility

Please be aware of livestock whilst walking in the countryside, most cows and sheep on public right of ways are safe but stay alert to the potential risk to you and your walking party, especially with cows and calves (see the link for more info. to stay safe).

Keep your dog on a lead around all livestock, even if your dog is especially well-behaved, the poor sheep don’t know this! Especially in lambing time, try to leave the field as calm as you found it. Directions

  • 1
    Start at the clock tower, with Main Street behind you and the A66 in front. With the clock tower behind you, walk 100m along the road and turn right in front of the Memorial Hall.

    Follow the road through the no vehicles barrier onto Castle View. At the end of the road turn left signposted Great Musgrave, over Brough Bypass (A66) and follow the quiet country road for 2km until you reach the sandstone buildings of Hall Garth on your right.

    Turn left opposite Hall Garth on to the concrete road, across Swindale Beck, and left through the metal field gate. Keeping Swindale Beck on your left keep in the field until you reach a metal pedestrian gate.

    Go through the gate and bear right a little, across the field and up towards the field barn on the horizon. You’ll pass through another two wooden pedestrian gates before reaching the field barn, where the path widens to hedge lined lonning.

    Follow the track, with views towards Brough Castle and the North Pennines, for 1km until the track gradually gives way to a tarmacked road, enclosed by sandstone cliffs on either side. Pass the entrance to the historic St Michael’s Church on the right, and follow the road until you reach the centre of Church Brough.

    To explore the historic ruins of Brough Castle, turn left at the entrance to Brough Castle Farm. When you are ready to continue, simply retrace your steps to Church Brough Green.

    From the flagpole, turn left and head down the road, crossing Augill Beck via Church Brough Bridge. Pass Brough Community Primary School, and follow the path back under the A66 and back to the Clock Tower.
