Rethinking rivers. For good.

2023-2028 strategic plan

Our strategic plan outlines how we will support practical action over the next five years to bring us closer to our vision of clean and healthy rivers, providing a brighter future for all.

Our Mission underpins this plan - to enhance and protect the River Eden, its tributaries and lakes—so that people and wildlife can thrive.

Shallow pebble strewn stream running through green valley floor rich in marsh plants to tree fringed fell base beyond and view of steep fells under blue cloudy skies in the far distance.

This is how we'll do it

People and community

We’re making Eden’s rivers more accessible, inclusive, and inspiring.

  • Better access to rivers for all, especially those who face the most barriers.
  • Engaging and meaningful volunteering and youth education programmes.
  • Annual campaigns on river-related issues like health and well-being, sustainability, and cost of living.

Impact: More people connected to nature; empowered to protect it.

Awareness and advocacy

We’re building a movement for rivers.

  • Creating clear ways for people to get involved (volunteer/donate).
  • Acting as a trusted source of river knowledge across Eden.
  • Promoting sustainable water use in buildings.
  • Supporting farmers to improve water and land management for resilient businesses and rivers.
  • Championing the care and replacement of failing private sewage systems.

Impact: A more informed and active community of river champions and boosted public recognition of Eden Rivers Trust’s work.

Nature and climate resilience

We’re restoring habitats and preparing for the future.

  • More natural rivers, connected with floodplains
  • More, diverse wetlands
  • Planting the right native trees and hedgerows in the right place!
  • Using nature-based solutions to contribute to a reduction in flood risk in Communities at Risk of flooding.

Impact: Healthier landscapes and greater resilience to climate change.

Cleaner water

We’re tackling pollution at its source.

  • Scaling up interventions on farms, such as 24m+ riparian buffers.
  • Leading integrated wetland restoration projects.
  • Evaluating and enhancing natural capital on 50 farms.

Impact: Cleaner water from source to sea.

Nature recovery

We’re safeguarding Eden’s unique species.

  • Supporting water vole and crayfish populations – habitat improvement, reintroduction programmes and data gathering
  • Managing invasive species like Himalayan balsam and mink.
  • Collaborating on beaver reintroduction.

Impact: More stable and thriving ecosystems.

Financial stability

We’re securing the future of our work.

  • Exploring and growing unrestricted and diverse income sources.

Impact: A resilient organisation ready to scale up impact.

Strong governance

We’re building a professional, inclusive, and effective team.

  • Improving diversity across staff, trustees, and supporters.
  • Always working smarter - strengthening internal systems and processes.
  • Fostering a happy and empowered workplace.

Impact: Long-term organisational health and reputation.
