Engine Lonning Discovery Day

Join us for an afternoon of free activities and the opportunity to explore a new Romans to Railways circular trail featuring way-markers, metalwork, mosaics and seating celebrating the site’s rich rail and Roman history and its wild woodlands.

We've made an existing 1km trail around Engine Lonning has been made wider, providing a more level walk, easier to use a pushchair on and suitable for wheelchair users. Explorers of all ages can take on the wild woodland mosaic trail to find the 15 wild creatures hidden in artwork around the route and younger adventurers can also join a woodland safari and create woodland crafts.

There will be opportunities to celebrate the sites Roman history by creating your own mini mosaic, trying stone carving or dressing like a Roman. You can also find out more about the sites recent history and join a guided tour of the ‘Canal Shed’ site and its role in repairing and servicing steam locomotives; led by members of the Carlisle Waverley Viaduct Trust.

Engine Lonning lies to the west of Carlisle city centre, next to the River Eden, just downstream from where the River Caldew flows into it. There is no visitor parking at or near Engine Lonning so if you are travelling by car, you'll need to use one of the city centre car parks and walk to the site.

The work at Engine Lonning has been supported by the Access to Eden: breaking barriers, building bridges partnership project led by ERT with a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund
