EXPLORE WILD WOODLANDS

Just over 1km in length, mostly flat, with a couple of short slopes. Way-markers, metalwork, mosaics and seating installed around the trail celebrate the site’s rich rail and Roman history and its wild woodlands.
  • Mosaic trail: Pick up our FREE TRAILMAP on the day and seek out all 15 creatures enjoying Engine Lonnings wild woodlands! Take the challenge to find all 9 mosaics at resting places and 4 metal birds perched on waymarkers around the circular trail.
  • Woodland safari: Help us find out more about the little critters that live in the meadow.
  • Creative woodland crafts: Join one of our woodland craft sessions learn some new woodland skills.

CELEBRATE ROMAN HISTORY

  • Mosaic making: Get creative, become a ‘mosaicist’ and design and make your very own mini-mosaic to take home.
  • Stone carving: Try your hand at stone carving.
  • Dress like a Roman: Soldier, Noble or Emperor, try on and model the colourful wardrobe of the Romans.

DISCOVER RAILWAY HISTORY

  • Way-markers and metalwork around the trail celebrate the site’s rail history. You’ll find locomotive names and numbers in seating and installations and the use of railway track in the creation of the path way-markers.
  • ‘Canal Shed’ history tour: Regular guided tours exploring the site and its role in repairing and servicing steam locomotives. The tour is kindly led by members of the Carlisle Waverley Viaduct Trust.
