Carlisle and Wreay walk following the River Petteril

Distance: 3 miles | 9.8km | 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours

Walk in the footsteps of Romans and a 19th century industrialist, through a woodland nature reserve and on to a fascinating village with an unusual church.

Linear route: The walk starts from near the Swallow Hilltop Hotel, just off London Road in Carlisle, which is accessible by public transport. The route follows river Petteril from Harraby Green to Newbiggin bridge. Return via bus 101 from Rockcliffe to Carlisle (via Cargo and Stanwix)

Wreay loop: Newbiggin Bridge > Wreay Woods > Wreay village > Newbiggin Hall > Newbiggin Bridge

Length: (linear route) 3 miles 9.8km 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.  (loop) 4/12 miles 13.9km. allow an additional 2 – 2/12 hours to do the Wreay loop

Grade: easy/moderate with stiles
