Elvers, bullheads and…wiggly worms!

19/05/2025

A class of children from Newlaithes Junior School in Carlisle were delighted to find a whole host of amazing river creatures when they visited the River Caldew.

Young people investigating river finds in a large white tray at the rivers edge, filled with water and samples of aquatic flora and fauna.

The children visited ‘Holme Head Bay’ in Carlisle with Tania, our Outdoor Learning Manager, as part of their 'Rivers' school topic. They met this little elver (a young eel) who has travelled around 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the Sargasso Sea to live in our rivers! When it is ready to reproduce, (which could be 20 years from now!) it’ll swim back across the Ocean to reproduce.

Bullheads and many thousands of tiny riverbed creatures made for a fantastic morning by the river. The ‘dance’ of the caseless caddisfly larvae was rated as the best dance moves in the world… “Doing the Worm! 🪱 Is it not the best dance moves ever!?” 🪱
