Walk Information

A short walk from Gilwilly Industrial Estate into Penrith town centre, through the main high street and on a circular route returning via the Castle and Penrith train station, an a return route back through Penrith Business Park.

Surface Details

Majority roadside pavement (95%), a short stretch of loose gravel path with one steep section at one end of the path (5%).

There is a one short steep section of gravel path (10m).

Please be aware of livestock whilst walking in the countryside, most cows and sheep on public right of ways are safe but stay alert to the potential risk to you and your walking party, especially with cows and calves (see the link for more info. to stay safe). Keep your dog on a lead around all livestock, even if your dog is especially well-behaved, the poor sheep don’t know this! Especially in lambing time, try to leave the field as calm as you found it. Directions

Starting on Haweswater Road, turn left into Mardale Road.

Look out for footpath fingerpost on your left hand side and follow gravel path. (There is a steep gradient at the end of the path rising to meet Myers Lane).

Follow path to the end and turn left onto Myers Lane.

On reaching the end of Myers Lane, continue straight ahead onto Norfolk road bearing right at the end across railway bridge.

Turn left at mini roundabout onto Brunswick Road. Follow to the foot of the hill.

Turn right onto Middlegate and Penrith's main high street.

Follow Middlegate until reaching Little Dockray, a pedestrianised street on your right hand side.

Follow the footpath and turn right onto Cornmarket.

Turn left onto Great Dockray and then right at the road triangle ahead.

Follow Princes Street and take second turning on your right into Castle Drive.

Follow Castle Drive as it loops round to the right. At its end, turn right onto Ullswater Road A592.

Continue along Ullwaster Road passing the Castle Park entrance on your right hand side and Penrith station to your left.

Continue to the roundabout and take the left exit onto Cromwell Road.

Continue a short distance to the next mini roundabout and turn left, taking the first exit left, crossing the railway bridge and joining Norfolk Road B5288.

Keep to the left hand pavement and keep left where the road Norfolk Road bends to the right, to head down Myers Lane.

At the end of Myers Lane, follow gravel path to your right.

Exit gravel path and turn left onto Mardale Road. At the T junction turn right onto Haweswater Road.

Continue on Haweswater Road until you reach your start point at the junction with Mardale Road.
